Breathing Space In a land far away There is hope on a beach In a broch In my thoughts I will feed every day with itself With my present state With my heart on a lead I could fall in a hole I could drive the circumference A piano broken up into parts Is a car that sits still I am here in a sky In a lead part that I didn't write Every word I will feed With the thought of a home On a hill Under trees All alone I'll sustain every year I will grow every hope I have.

Span 04:09
Span Weekends were deadly every time On over to the gaping firth Filled up the spaces in my mouth We heard the band and then the drive Snow on the tar but we survived I tried to hide my disappointment My heart is cast in bronze My skull is cracked Now that I’m healed, my strength returned Now every day my stomach churns What I deserve I haven’t earned My place on plinth or in museum Or a stone bed in mausoleum Hand over yesterday’s per diems Our hearts are cut in stone Our lives are lived alone My heart is cast in bronze My skull is cracked See how it turns How we will survive All is waltz All our faults Show we are alive We vibrate all at once Or at our own rate How we last is how we love Our time is so fast See it turn Tell, tell me rocks won’t break On my brow Lines drawn on my face In our dreams plains curve Bridges span all our thoughts Favourite pen on palm Tell me Only dreams Only dreams Only dreams.

I Love Map 04:24
I Love Map From Portree to Brighton I’m drawing the lines on a map Wherever your feet fall I’ll measure the rainfall I’ll collect every last drop Lover, cover me The distance is scaled Navigation prevailed Baby, you’re not here So call me tonight Multiply my delight Like our middle names We may become lost in trees But my map is such That you will always Navigate back to me Baby, cartography The contours of us Beneath the covers Lover, cover me The distance is scaled Navigation prevailed Here, take this Come here, take this map Show me the way You know I get lost in London In parks we’ll make something Plot me the line Show me the way to your heart And back to your flat There I can show you Ba ba ba ba ba ba Ba ba ba ba ba ba Lover, cover me The distance is scaled Navigation prevailed Baby, you’re not here So call me tonight Multiply my delight Baby, cartography The contours of us Beneath the covers Lover, cover me The distance is scaled Navigation prevailed.

Ribbon On A Bough You’re a ribbon on a bough You’re a ribbon on a bough You’re a ribbon on a bough You’re a ribbon on a bough You’re a ribbon on a bough Jumping hares wait for light And a river running slow You’re meandering tonight Through the twilit silver dreams Every second ripples to Wooden floors the gap between Trough, peak, wave to you. Liquid in light, cornered at night In your room you feel safe The perfect lit face I’m the sulphur yellow haze The sunset stubborn ways Can you take a heart And weld a new part? You’re a ribbon on a bough See the apple’s sagging weight There’s a beast among the flock There’s a serpent on your plate But that’s a feature of a bad dream And to wake is to redeem In his arms I tell you sister You’re at safety’s marble feet Liquid in light, cornered at night In your room you feel safe The perfect lit face I’m the sulphur yellow haze Sunset stubborn ways Can you take a heart And weld a new part? Liquid in light, cornered at night In your room you feel safe The perfect lit face I’m the sulphur yellow haze The sunset stubborn ways Can you take a heart And weld a new part? Liquid in light, cornered at night In your room you feel safe The perfect lit face I’m the sulphur yellow haze The sunset stubborn ways Can you take a heart And weld a new part? I’m the sulphur yellow haze The sunset stubborn ways Can you take a heart And weld a new part? You’re a ribbon on a bough You’re a ribbon on a bough You’re a ribbon on a bough You’re a ribbon on a bough You’re a ribbon on a bough You’re a ribbon on a bough You’re a ribbon on a bough You’re a ribbon on a bough.

Seventh Song 03:28
Seventh Song Used to seeing you Not used to re-seeing you Beneath two ways of thinking On two different streets At two separate ends I'm used to regret I'm used to feeling upset And on the seventh day I will begin to pray Only so much gone I'm only so much gone There's only you and it You and it Between the heads of state Of the state of my head I'm used to regret I'm used to feeling upset I bury my head in a simple prayer In a simple prayer Is a prayer a wish to god? Is a prayer a wish to god? I'm used to regret I'm used to feeling upset The state of my head When I reach the end of it Will you say a prayer for it? Is a prayer a wish to god? Is a prayer a wish to god?

Choose Your Words Carefully So that’s how we pray We mumble our way In binary talk With wings hot And that’s how we say Hello to our graves And when we free fall We fall out So watch what you say If you come this way We cut and we curse And what’s worse The lines on my face Are painted that way A cold concrete punch For your lunch I’ve timed out I’ve timed out We’ve timed out We’re timed (We’re sick of words We’re sick of saying Sick and tired of all negotiation Rather than lift our heads We’d rather take our beds We’re just sick of waiting) Be careful my pet You’ve not spoken yet A binary talk With wings hot And that’s how you pray You mumble your way And when you free fall We fall out So watch what you say If you come my way A cold concrete punch For your lunch The lines on my face Are painted that way We kiss and we part Before dark Choose your words Choose your words Choose your words I could keep guessing Choose your words I could keep guessing Choose your words Choose your words I could keep guessing Choose your words I could keep guessing With care Choose your words I could keep guessing With care With care Choose your words With care.

Only Colour 03:49
Only Colour Don’t you look at me There is no matter here I’m not blood and bone I’m only colour Don’t you look at me I’m only colour There is no matter here And I’m not blood and bone And I’m moving away from here Under my roof I can think at my own pace Under my floor there’s a crawl space Under my stars there’s a loch full of dead cars Under my stairs there’s a fire in the wires Fire in the wires Up on that hill there’s a broch from the old days And under that shore they’ll be forever more On top of these words there’s a hand and a hard hat Above this word there’s a hard heart No no no, no no no no No no no, no no no no No no no, no no no no No no no, no no no no I'm not blood and bone And I'm moving away from here Don’t you look at me I’m only colours There is no matter here (And I'm moving away from here) I’m not blood and bones And I’m moving.

First Light 03:39
First Light Every time I come around there Black boxes full of tar abound Did you notice when it left you? No polis came to protect you Somewhere up the trains We were only weans Who died and forgot about this As a child I knew that I would die As I grew up Material It’s all material Such fine material Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, material Now every time I come away Fluorescent strip-lights always say Here’s your colour temperature kids Spin me round And turn it up Don’t look down When you come up Here’s the truth So listen up We all died when we grew up First light is our last Last light is our first light First light is our last Last light is our first light First light is our last Last light is our first light First light is our last Last light is our first light First light is our last Last light is our first light First light is our last Last light is our first light.

A Perfect Landing Underpass you are my cradle Catching me when I fall down Carry me, I’m no longer able Hit the floor like a rocket Now I’m on the pavement Lucifer is talking Oriental voices Call me, call my name Empty eyes you are the best Glare at me, give me the rest I don’t deserve what I’ve puked up Now I wait for us to make up Only darkness ruins My secret undoing Tweak my understanding Of the perfect landing Oh Lucifer I know the feeling You've been ignored Well, prepare for more Do you expect me to sing when I’m the one in the ring When I’ve got kids to protect And they keep falling out Do you expect me to cheer when I’m the one with the peers Who spend it all in the bars and fall apart Now we’re on the pavement There’s no devil talking We just like to sit there With our hands white with chalking Draw my face on that square of black tarmac Draw our hands together Draw their faces there.

There’s A Phantom Hiding In My Loft Up in my loft Breathing is soft Like birds in my hand And the air between Love is the rampart A fire to stamp out I can kill men Over and over again Oh, my weak heart is in darkness But it's not my own darkness It's here that made me like this A killer instinct It’s hard to avoid The urge to destroy Hurt those around me So hide in the loft Beside my pet phantom He can kill men over and over again Oh, my weak heart is in darkness But it's not my own darkness It's here that made me like this Oh, my bleak words are revealing What I need and am feeling These cuts are too deep for healing Will you come back to life my love? Will you come back to life my heart? Will you come back to me my pet when it’s dark? Will you came back to me my words? Will you come back to me my songs? Will you come back to me at night when they've gone? They've gone. Oh, my weak heart is in darkness But it's not only darkness It's light that keeps me like this Oh, my bleak words are revealing What I need and am feeling These cuts are too deep for healing Oh, my weak heart is in darkness But it's not my own darkness It's you that left me like this All I need and am feeling My cuts are too deep for healing Oh, my weak heart is in darkness But it's not my own darkness It's light that keeps us like this Oh, my bleak words keep revealing What I need and am feeling These cuts are too deep for healing Oh, my weak heart is in darkness But it's not my own darkness It's you that left me like this.

about

Gargleblast Records are extremely proud to announce the release of The Other Half of Everything, the outstanding debut solo album from Scottish songwriter Martin John Henry (ex De Rosa).

Working for over a year with producer Andy Miller (Mogwai, Life Without Buildings, Scout Niblett), Henry has emerged with his most progressive, ambitious and accessible album to date. Sung, plucked and synthesised with painstaking care, the 11 tracks of The Other Half of Everything have a sound and scope that evokes the epic landscape of the cover art, while occasionally dipping into the poetic suburban folk that De Rosa fans adore.

Selected press for Martin John Henry's songwriting...

“Beautifully captures an idyllic nation immersed in fragile contradiction” - The Skinny

“Insidiously compelling contemporary prog-pop” - The Scotsman

"The kind of parochial majesty you might encounter if The Pixies reworked The Go-Betweens "Before Hollywood" for a documentary about the social history of Lanarkshire. Yes, that good." - Mojo

credits

Martin John Henry - vocals, guitar, bass guitar, drums, synthesiser, keyboards, piano, programming
